If the correct storage conditions are not observed, the vulcanized rubber rollers change their physical properties due to UV lights, ozone, heat, moisture, oxidation, dust, oil and solvents and may eventually become unusable due to hardening. Changes and deformations such as softening, cracking, scratching or other surface deterioration occur as a result of all these factors.
The shelf life of the rollers can be increased significantly by taking certain precautions and complying with international standards.
The storage area must be cool, dry and dust-free and well ventilated.
- Rollers should be kept away from heat, moisture, solvents and solvent vapors.
- The ideal storage temperature for rubber rollers should be between +10°C and +20°C, never above +25°C and not below +5°C.
- The relative humidity in the storage area should be below 65% and should never exceed 70%.
- Rollers must be protected from sun and UV lights, ozone formation must be definitely prevented.
- Always store the rollers that you are not using in a flat, wrinkle-free, special UV-protective wrapping paper.
- All windows in the areas where the rollers are stored should be painted red or orange or covered with a light-tight red or orange color.
- The lights in the warehouse should not be kept on for a long time.
- Never install electrical appliances, motors or systems with sparks or strong high voltage fields in the storage room.
- Do not store lubricants, fuels, solvents, chemicals, acids or disinfectants together with the rollers.
- The rubber-coated surfaces of the rollers should never come into contact with hard grounds, no weight on the rubber surface, and if possible it should be stored by hanging it at the ends of the cores.
- Long and heavy rollers should be stored vertically, but the rubber surfaces should not touch any hard places.
- Vertically stacked rollers should be checked regularly. The rollers should be rotated 180° every 10-15 days to avoid one-sided deformation.
- After long storage periods of more than 6 months, re-sand the soft rubber rollers before using them. (Oxidation is possible.)
- If you detect hairline cracks due to stretching, especially in soft rubber coatings, sand it immediately so that the surface is flawless and flexible again, or send it to the roller manufacturer for grinding.
- If possible, do not use soft rubber-coated rollers under high pressure and/or high temperature. Before using these rollers again, warm them slowly to their operating temperature.
- After packing the rollers very carefully with special UV protective wrapping paper, ship the rollers in suitable boxes. Use custom-made corrugated cardboard boxes with a thickness of 30-50 mm with sufficient space on all sides.
Cleaning of Rubber Rollers:
- If possible, use a clean cloth and warm water. After a longer storage period, use 1,5% sodium carbonate solution for cleaning and then rinse with water. Solvents such as trichloroethene, tetrachloromethane and carbon hydrides should not be used for cleaning.
